The impact on teaching and learning
The first graduates who have benefited from engagement with all aspects of the Teaching and Learning Programme completed in July 2006. Although it is still early days in terms of measuring impact, there are some very positive indicators identified in evaluation reports published to date.
Some of the benefits identified by the research include:
- improvement of learners’ behaviour, satisfaction, retention and achievement, including increased learner interaction and engagement in lessons
- improved teacher/trainer morale, which appears to have a direct connection with the impact on learning
- overall quality improvement in the organisation.
Other interesting points that emerged from the evaluation were just how much Subject Learning Coaches value subject coaching network meetings, coaching in the workplace, professional dialogue, the opportunities for reflection and for accreditation that recognised their professional development. The free teaching and learning resources are valued by both managers and Subject Learning Coaches alike.
The research acknowledged that the Teaching and Learning Programme is part of a long-term strategy that requires time to work with peers to fully implement and embed the principles, strategies and approaches throughout curriculum areas for it to be most effective and for the impact on learners to become visible. It also indicated that the programme is most effective in terms of quality improvement when it is part of a planned CPD/staff development agenda.
