5. Maintain momentum

Embedding subject learning coaching in other appropriate systems and processes will maintain the momentum and make the benefits of the programme sustainable.

Establish communities of practice

The programme operates on a spiral curriculum: each time we revisit a theory, tool, or strategy or approach a task we have done before, we do it with the benefit of prior experience. This experiential, scaffolding approach combined with a strong focus on reflective practice and action research fosters an enquiring and continually developing culture that can only be beneficial. By creating opportunities for teams and individuals to work together to explore how best to promote active learning, we can sustain this progressive movement further and form effective communities of practice.

Communication

Maintaining regular and steady communication at every stage of the initiative is essential in order to allow those with common goals to work together, maintain progress, publicise opportunities to participate, promote successes and disseminate outcomes.

Consider using your intranet or e-learning portal; promoting weekly or monthly ‘top tips’; and using newsletters, team meetings and staff training events to maintain momentum.

Monitor and review

Use quality assurance processes to monitor and review progress and to identify where Subject Learning Coaches could add value and support others.

Subject coaching networks

Regular attendance at subject coaching network events will keep your Subject Learning Coaches growing and developing. This is a vital part of the nationally-provided support mechanism and means that your Subject Learning Coaches remain well informed about new initiatives, resources and techniques. They will also benefit from working collaboratively with a broader spectrum of providers.
