Seeing is believing

Have Subject Learning Coaches made a difference?

Evidence of the impact of the National Teaching and Learning Change Programme is emerging from a number of sources, including inspection reports and independent evaluations of the programme completed in 2005 and 2007.

What the evaluations have found

Improved climate in the classroom

Surveys of managers and Subject Learning Coaches indicate a belief that learning behaviour and learners’ satisfaction, retention and achievement have improved as a result of their organisation’s involvement in the programme.

Targeted intervention

The impact is especially high where:

  • the work of Subject Learning Coaches is part of a planned CPD/staff development agenda
  • Subject Learning Coaches have an appropriate caseload
  • Subject Learning Coaches’ efforts are targeted towards identified weaknesses in self-assessment reviews.

Inspection gains

In organisations that deploy Subject Learning Coaches skilfully, the engagement and motivation of learners, the quality of resources and variety of activities, improved attendance and retention data have resulted in higher teaching and learning grades.

The appointment of Subject Learning Coaches has renewed the drive of many organisations towards effective self-assessment and CPD. The impact has been felt beyond individual curriculum areas.
